Solar and wind farms in the Sahara

A climate model examined hypothetical large wind and solar farms in the Sahara and neighboring Sahel. In that scenario they could generate more electricity than the world then used and alter local rainfall and vegetation. This is not a proven plan to cover the whole desert: the estimate depends on the modeled scale and assumptions, and deployment would have major technical, economic, and environmental consequences.
