At a 1964 exhibition in Gothenburg, four paintings were shown under the name Pierre Brassau, supposedly a French artist. They had actually been made by Peter, a chimpanzee at Borås Zoo; journalist Åke “Dacke” Axelsson staged the experiment to test art critics’ reactions. Critic Rolf Anderberg initially praised the works and, after the reveal, insisted they were still the best in the exhibition.
