A little wonder, every day

The LHC programme’s economic estimate

Cutaway-style circular particle accelerator beneath a European landscape, with an abstract map display. Generated with OpenAI image generation; prompt: photorealistic science-publication illustration of a circular accelerator, particle beam, European map motif, no text or logos; not documentary.
MRI scanner beside an abstract particle-tracking display in a research setting. Generated with OpenAI image generation; prompt: educational illustration about links between particle physics and medical imaging, explicitly not claiming that the depicted MRI derives from CERN; no text or logos.
Precision components in an engineering workshop with an accelerator tunnel in the background. Generated with OpenAI image generation; prompt: illustrative research-infrastructure engineering workshop, no text or logos, not a specific facility.

The Large Hadron Collider’s estimated economic impact is not an annual contribution to GDP. CERN reports approximately €3.3 billion in net present value of societal benefits for the LHC programme over 1993–2038, after investment and operating costs are deducted. The estimate was prepared by the University of Milan and the Centre for Industrial Studies; it covers one research programme across that full period.
