Autumn coloration in deciduous leaves involves more than cold alone. Shortening days and seasonal temperature changes influence leaf senescence and the breakdown of green chlorophyll. Yellow and orange carotenoids become visible, while some species produce red anthocyanins in autumn. Species, light, moisture and weather affect timing and intensity, so there is no single rule for every tree.
