Ancient Water Deep Underground

Researchers found very ancient water in rock fractures about 3 km underground at the Kidd Creek Mine near Timmins, Ontario. In 2016, the team reported water whose age was estimated at roughly two billion years using geochemical indicators. Earlier, in 2013, the same research group published results for water from 2.4 km depth, with isolation times of roughly 1.5–2.6 billion years.

This is ancient deep groundwater brine moving or residing in rock fractures; the popular word “pocket” can misleadingly suggest a separate underground lake. Its geological age does not mean the water is clean or suitable to drink.
