The depth and width of Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge in Greece’s Pindus Mountains is often described as about 900 m deep and roughly 1,100 m wide rim to rim at a notable cross-section. The national park management authority gives these figures and links them to a 1997 Guinness record. A 2019 digital morphometric analysis, however, measured a maximum depth of 1,144 m, a maximum width of 2,420 m, and a maximum depth-to-width ratio of 0.76 at a separate cross-section. Thus 900 × 1,100 m is a well-known estimate for one section, not the single set of dimensions for the whole gorge.

Gorge dimensions vary along its course and depend on where they are measured.
