Zentsuji square watermelons in Japan are produced by growing fruit inside a rigid mold, rather than creating a separate “square” biological species. Local authorities describe them as ornamental products: fruit is harvested immature to preserve the shape, making it unlike an ordinary sweet eating watermelon. A convenient shape does not establish that this is generally a cheaper way to supply edible watermelons.
