Urine in Roman Workshops
In ancient Rome, fullers used aged urine when washing textiles; urine-based solutions were also used to remove hair from hides before tanning. As bacteria break down urea, ammonia forms and creates an alkaline solution. Suetonius says Emperor Vespasian imposed a tax associated with urine; whether the levy applied to collection, sale, or use is debated in the sources.
