Beerenberg on Jan Mayen
Beerenberg on the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen is the world’s northernmost active volcano that rises above sea level. Earlier measurements gave its height as 2,277 m; new topographic maps published in 2023 show 2,272 m. This is a revised map measurement, not evidence of a sudden physical lowering of the summit. During the 1970 eruption, personnel at the meteorological and navigation station were evacuated to the mainland while the threat was assessed; they later returned. Jan Mayen has no permanent civilian population, so “residents” is imprecise here [1–3].
