Music in the Stone Age

Flutes made from bird bones and mammoth ivory, found in caves of Germany’s Swabian Jura, are among the oldest known musical instruments. They date to roughly 35,000–40,000 years ago; some instruments from the region may be older still. These finds show that people made music long before cities and writing, although the artifacts cannot tell us exactly what their melodies sounded like.
