“18 hectares of pizza per year” appears to be a corrupted version of an older estimate: Americans were said to eat about 100 acres of pizza per day (roughly 40 hectares), or 350 slices per second. This figure is widely repeated in industry material, but its methodology is unclear. In a representative USDA survey from 2013–2014, about 13% of Americans ate pizza on any given day.
