Why Earth is called the blue planet
Oceans cover about 71% of Earth’s surface, making water the striking feature that gives the planet its blue appearance from space. The first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, described Earth from orbit as bluish. Still, the popular label “blue planet” should not be credited to one moment or to his flight alone: it is chiefly explained by the oceans dominating Earth’s appearance from space.
