A little wonder, every day

The gold chervonets and its return

Reverse of a 1923 gold chervonets coin, showing the Sower design.

Gold chervonets coins depicting a sower began to be minted in 1923. Their specifications followed the imperial ten-ruble gold coin. The design later returned: renewed minting began in 1975 and continued through 1982. A long interruption therefore separated the early issue from its later revival. [1, 2]

The gold coin should not be confused with the paper chervonets introduced earlier as part of monetary reform. A shared name does not make the metal and paper issues the same object. Calling it the only hard currency in all Soviet history would require a definition and separate evidence; no such conclusion is made here.
