A Roman amphora shipwreck off Italy

In 2012, an Italian diving team identified a roughly 2,000-year-old Roman merchant shipwreck off the Ligurian coast. It carried more than 200 amphorae. Contemporary reports quoting the dive-team commander said many vessels inside the wreck were believed to remain sealed and might contain food; testing of some amphorae found traces of fish, grain, wine, and oil. This does not mean every amphora was intact or hermetically sealed.
