A little wonder, every day

Water vapor molecules move rapidly and randomly

Molecular speed is not the same as bulk water motion.

Listen to fact0:00 / —

In water vapor at 100°C, molecules move randomly, with an average speed of about 660 meters per second—roughly 2,400 km/h. This is a gas-phase average: individual molecules move at different speeds and in different directions, so the water in a kettle is not “rushing” that fast.
