Bats are the only mammals capable of active, or powered, flight: they generate lift by flapping their wings rather than only gliding. Many species navigate and find prey using echolocation, the echoes of sounds they produce. But not all bats have this ability; most fruit bats, for example, rely mainly on sight and smell.
