Black widow venom contains the potent neurotoxin alpha-latrotoxin, which affects neurotransmitter release. But without specifying the rattlesnake species, venom composition, laboratory test, and units, saying it is “stronger” than the venom of many rattlesnakes is not a valid universal comparison. Toxicity per unit mass is only one measure; the consequences of a bite also depend on how much venom is delivered, the bite location, and the person’s condition. Both bites can be medically significant, and they should not be ranked by one broad label.
