Some sea stars evert their cardiac stomach through the mouth and apply it to edible prey tissues. Part of digestion takes place externally, after which nutrient material moves inside. The organ is not discarded: the stomach can retract. Feeding strategies vary by species, so this should not be automatically generalized to every echinoderm.
