In 1948, Stanisław Lem completed his medical coursework at the Jagiellonian University but did not take the final examinations and did not receive a medical degree. In Lem’s recollection, he feared that after graduating he, like his friends, would be taken into the army for a permanent career as a military doctor. From 1948 to 1950, he worked as a junior assistant at Mieczysław Choynowski’s Circle for the Science of Science.
