Are viruses alive?

Whether viruses count as “living organisms” depends on how life is defined and remains a subject of scientific debate. Viruses lack cellular structure; outside a host cell they cannot reproduce independently and rely on the host’s molecular machinery. These features are often used to distinguish viruses from cellular life. [1–3]

Viruses are acellular and depend on host cells to reproduce.
