Hennig Brand and the Discovery of Phosphorus

Around 1669, Hamburg alchemist Hennig Brand isolated white phosphorus while processing large quantities of urine in pursuit of the philosopher’s stone. The discovery was a by-product of deliberate alchemical experiments, rather than pure accident. White phosphorus glows during slow oxidation in air and is toxic and highly flammable.

Synthetic historical illustration of Brand’s laboratory; not a documentary image.
