The history of the tea bag

A popular account credits tea merchant Thomas Sullivan with popularizing tea bags around 1908 by sending samples in small silk pouches; customers supposedly liked brewing tea in them. This was not the first invention of a tea bag: earlier patents and designs existed, and the details of Sullivan’s story are poorly documented.
