Monet grew up in a grocer’s family

Claude Monet grew up in Le Havre in a family connected with wholesale groceries and supplying ships. His father Adolphe worked in that business, but young Claude chose drawing: as a teenager he became known for caricatures. Behind the story of a “future grocer” lies a real commercial family background, rather than an established verdict from a teacher that he lacked talent.
His family did not always approve of his choices. MoMA’s chronology notes that in 1859 he worked at the Académie Suisse in Paris against their wishes. Eugène Boudin instead became an important mentor, encouraging Monet to paint outdoors. The exact phrase “be a grocer rather than an artist” should not be presented as a documented quotation without a specific source.
