How an Owl Turns Its Head
Owls can turn their heads about 270° in one direction. Researchers found 14 cervical vertebrae in the barn owls they examined—twice the seven in humans. Features of the vertebrae and blood vessels help reduce vessel injury and maintain blood supply to the brain during rotation. This mobility is useful because an owl’s eyes are nearly fixed in their sockets. The illustration is a synthetic AI visualization.
