A Lake Under Ice That Hints at Other Worlds

Hundreds of subglacial lakes lie beneath Antarctica’s ice sheet. One of the largest, Lake Vostok, is hidden below about 4 km of ice. Researchers estimate that it has remained continuously ice-covered for roughly 14–15 million years.

Artistic reconstruction: a subglacial Antarctic lake and an ocean beneath an icy moon. The layout, scale, and possible microbes are schematic.

Researchers have reported microbial traces in ice samples associated with Lake Vostok. The biomass is extremely low, and drilling can contaminate samples, so their origin and the presence of life in the lake water remain under study. By contrast, researchers directly confirmed a microbial ecosystem in another Antarctic subglacial lake, Lake Whillans.

These environments on Earth help scientists investigate conditions that might exist in the oceans beneath the ice of Jupiter’s moon Europa and Saturn’s moon Enceladus. They are useful analogues for the search for life, not evidence that life has been found beyond Earth.
