New Zealand’s Te Urewera Act 2014 recognizes Te Urewera as a legal entity with the rights, powers, duties and liabilities specified by law. This concerns a particular natural area and its legal status, rather than automatically giving every tree in the country that status. A dedicated board acts on Te Urewera’s behalf. It is a legal means of representing and protecting a natural place, rather than making a forest biologically human.
