"Cosmetics" from gladiator sweat
In Roman bathing culture, athletes and bathers scraped a mixture of oil, sweat, and dirt from the body with a strigil. However, the popular claim that gladiator sweat and arena-animal fat were widely sold in souvenir cosmetic pots lacks reliable support in ancient sources. It likely blends well-attested strigil and oil practices with Greek athletic customs and later retellings. The claim, as stated, is therefore unsubstantiated.
