The 1883 Krakatau eruption
The August 1883 eruption of Krakatau (also spelled Krakatoa) was one of the most powerful documented volcanic explosions. Its roar was heard roughly 3,000–4,800 km away, while the atmospheric pressure wave circled Earth several times and was recorded by barographs. Tsunamis caused by the eruption devastated coastal settlements and killed about 36,000 people. The eruption also produced optical effects and vivid sunsets in many regions.
