Stegosaurus was a large dinosaur with a disproportionately small brain cavity. The familiar comparison says its brain was walnut-sized, but modern museum materials use other rough analogies: the Natural History Museum in London says a plum, while the American Museum of Natural History says a small lemon or lime. Body mass is also estimated from fossils using different methods: NHM gives about 2 tonnes for an adult, while a nearly complete young specimen was estimated at about 1.6 tonnes. The key point—that the brain was small relative to the body—is well established, but “3 tonnes and a walnut” is a simplified popular formula.
