Oymyakon: A Settlement at the "Pole of Cold"
Oymyakon in Yakutia is a rural settlement known for its exceptionally cold winters. Temperatures can fall below −50 °C, and the Oymyakon weather station recorded −67.7 °C in 1933. The World Meteorological Organization also lists the same minimum for Verkhoyansk, so the title of coldest permanently inhabited place depends on how settlement records are defined and compared. People living in the region adapt daily life to prolonged severe cold.
