Silver and Antimicrobial Properties

Silver ions can inhibit or kill some microorganisms under specific conditions; silver-containing materials are used, for example, in some dressings and medical devices. This does not mean that any silver tableware prevents infection or treats disease. The story that Alexander the Great’s soldiers with silver cups fell ill less often in India is not reliably supported by ancient sources, and the cause of the reported outbreaks cannot be established.
