Water for Agriculture

Agriculture is the largest user of freshwater: FAO reports that it accounted for about 72% of global withdrawals in 2023. The share varies substantially by country and exceeds 90% in many low-income countries. This refers to water withdrawals, not water consumed irreversibly: some water returns to the environment.
