A little wonder, every day

Picasso’s first word was reportedly “pencil”

possible post-medieval lead pencil, dated 1500–1700 by the Portable Antiquities Scheme; photographed by Heather Beeton for National Museums Liverpool, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0. [Source](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Post_medieval_lead_pencil_(FindID_1029454).jpg). Visually checked. This illustrates the object referred to in the story; it is not claimed to be Picasso’s first spoken word.

Later biographical articles quote Picasso’s family saying he uttered “piz”, shortened from lápiz, “pencil”. It is a memorable story, but the known source is retrospective recollection, not a contemporary record of an infant’s speech.
