Owls' asymmetrical hearing

In some owls, including barn owls, the ear openings are asymmetrical. Differences in their shape and height help the brain compare when and how loudly a sound reaches each ear, locating prey in space. Experiments have shown that barn owls can find prey by sound in complete darkness. Hearing is a major advantage for nocturnal hunting, though owls also use vision and other cues.
