Spacetime as a Four-Dimensional Model

In special and general relativity, an event is described by three spatial coordinates and one time coordinate. Together they form four-dimensional spacetime. Time is a coordinate in the mathematical model and is closely linked with space, but it is not identical to spatial dimensions: the time component has a different sign and physical role in the spacetime metric.
