The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercially available handheld cellular phone. In 1984, it cost about US$4,000; according to the Smithsonian, the handset weighed 2.5 pounds (about 1.1 kg) and had about 30 minutes of battery life. A full charge took about ten hours. Its large size and weight earned it the nickname “the brick.”
