Shakespeare on screen

William Shakespeare’s plays have inspired hundreds of screen versions, from close adaptations to stories moved into new times and places. There is no single exact count: some catalogues count direct adaptations, while others include references, parodies or even films credited to Shakespeare as a writer. That is why a figure such as “307 films and 41 modernizations” needs its counting rules.
