Salt, Trade, and the Word "Salary"
Before refrigeration, salt was an important way to preserve food and a valuable commodity. The English word *salary* came through French from Latin *salarium*, a term associated with salt. But the popular story that Roman soldiers were regularly paid in salt is not reliably supported: ancient sources attest monetary military pay, and the meaning of *salarium* varied.
*Сіль була цінним товаром, але римське жалування сіллю — непевна історія. / Salt was valuable, but the story of Roman soldiers paid in salt is uncertain.*
