Protected areas worldwide

The figures of 2,500 large areas and 2.7% of land do not match current global accounting. The Protected Planet Report 2024 says 17.5% of the world’s terrestrial area and inland waters are within protected or other recognized conserved areas. This includes multiple types of sites, not only large national parks or reserves; coverage alone does not indicate conservation effectiveness.
