In 1973 Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn began working together on rules for exchanging data between different computer networks. Their 1974 paper described an approach that underpinned the later development of TCP/IP. The internet was not fully “invented in 1973” by one person: it built on ARPANET, packet switching and many teams’ work. The World Wide Web is a later service running over the internet, rather than another name for it.
