A Bat's Wing Is a Hand Built for Flight

A bat’s wing is built from the forelimb: the upper-arm and forearm bones, plus elongated fingers. A thin, flexible membrane stretches between the digits, body, and hindlimbs. The thumb usually remains free and helps the bat cling. The basic forelimb bone plan is also present in the human hand, though proportions and functions differ.

Synthetic anatomical illustration; proportions are stylized and it is not a medical atlas.
