In December 1879 Thomas Edison publicly demonstrated electric lighting at the Menlo Park laboratory complex. Practical illumination required a whole system: lamps, generators and electricity distribution. In September 1882 his Pearl Street power station in New York began serving customers. The 1879 demonstration and the launch of an urban power network were different stages. The claim that people necessarily went to bed at nightfall before the light bulb oversimplifies history: artificial lighting already existed.
