Ancient microbial life

Bacteria and Archaea are two major groups of single-celled organisms without nuclei, and their members live on Earth today. The oldest widely recognized fossil evidence of life consists of microbial structures about 3.5 billion years old, although life’s precise origin remains under study. Calling living bacteria or archaea “primitive” is misleading: they are modern groups with long evolutionary histories. [1–3]
