Tales of sacrifice at Masaya volcano

Sixteenth-century colonial chronicles contain accounts of human offerings associated with Nicaragua’s Masaya volcano; a later ethnographic work retells a report that a maiden was cast into the crater. These are chroniclers’ reports, not proof that a sacrifice was believed to stop an eruption or that the victims were specifically “beautiful girls.” The joke that such girls quickly “ran out” is unsupported by the sources.

Colonial accounts of Masaya need careful reading.
