Genetic drift

Genetic drift is a random change in the frequencies of genetic variants (alleles) in a population across generations. Drift has a stronger relative effect in small populations because chance deviations in the transmission of just a few copies make up a larger share of the gene pool. [1–3]

Random shifts in allele frequencies are more pronounced in small populations.
