Fact 1013 — An Earthquake at Panticapaeum?

The earthquake of 63 BCE, often called the Panticapaeum earthquake and described as the oldest documented quake in present-day Ukraine, should not be presented as established fact. A reanalysis of the ancient sources concluded that the accounts of Dio Cassius and Orosius concerned an earthquake in Syria, with no evidence for a Crimean earthquake that year.

Synthetic historical illustration of Panticapaeum, not a reconstruction or evidence of an earthquake.
