The pond Monet painted for decades

Claude Monet’s Water Lilies is a large cycle of paintings rather than a single canvas. The Musée de l’Orangerie describes more than 250 works on the theme. Their source was the water garden he created at his Giverny home: the pond, plants and reflections offered countless combinations of colour and light.
Monet returned to the subject from the late 1890s until his death in 1926. By changing viewpoint, format and the time of observation, he explored the same place repeatedly. Returning to the motif revealed differences in water and illumination that a single glance could miss.
