J.R.R. Tolkien typed the whole of *The Lord of the Rings* himself twice, and some sections more often. In a 1964 letter, he recalled typing on a bed in an attic; in an interview, he explained that he could not afford to hire a typist. The familiar claim that he used exactly two fingers has no reliable confirmation.
