Birds' magnetic compass
Migratory birds use Earth’s magnetic field for orientation. One candidate light-sensitive sensor is cryptochrome 4 (Cry4) in the retina: laboratory experiments have shown magnetic sensitivity. Scientists are still determining whether Cry4 is the receptor in living birds and how the brain processes the signal. The proposed mechanism is light-dependent chemistry, not “reading wavelengths” of the magnetic field.
