Knocker-up: the human alarm clock

In industrial British towns, especially Lancashire, workers paid “knocker-ups” to wake them early. They tapped on windows with long poles and sometimes knocked on doors until clients woke. The occupation met a need before affordable alarm clocks became widespread and survived in some places into the twentieth century. It is well documented, though it was not equally common in every town in England and Ireland.
